Isle of Man Tour 2017
On Friday August 11th 2017 I crossed the Irish Sea on a ferry from Heysham and headed for the Isle of Man.
Two days cycling around the island awaited me. I travelled with 3 others from Barrow Cycling Group, and met a further 3 members on the island when we docked. Barrow Cycling Group is a social cycling group of like-minded people who like anything bike.
My Wilier GTR was my choice for my first visit to the IOM. The climbing ability and good handling on descents suiting the IOM hills perfectly. Upon reaching the Island we were greeted by our guide and fellow riders. The Bike was staying in the Hotel room with me! I made sure of that! We had a late tea and discussed the ride ahead for the next day.

On Saturday, we toured the island. We set out to ride the coast line from Douglas, anticlockwise back to Douglas. Eight of us were riding in total. It was a showery start but that wasn’t going to stop us! We headed to Ramsey along the coast line riding through the showers. The bike handled fine in the rain. I had my Endura Race Cape jacket which is fully waterproof so all was well. Chatting our way around we enjoyed the climbs and managed the damp descents with no problems. Jurby and the Guardsman cafe was our first stop for Cake and coffee, it didn’t disappoint.
Our next stop was Peel. A beautiful place for a photo stop. We then continued on to Port St Erin for refreshments and more photos. After an hour or so we mounted our bikes and headed back to Douglas, we had made it! Full circle. 80 Miles accomplished.

On Sunday, we tackled the famous TT Circuit. At around 37 miles in total it was going to a shorter ride than Saturday, but it included a mountain pass, so it wasn’t going to be easy. The roads around the circuit were very well maintained and not a pot hole in sight! The traffic was fairly quite too, which was great for us. The infamous climb up Snaefell was 6 miles long! We headed up the mountain together, chatting, encouraging each other and steadily making our way to the top.
At the top of Snaefell we were met by the Electric Railway. Once it passed we headed quickly down (the descent was absolutely awesome!). The bike handled impeccably, it was a fab experience with brilliant views. We all re-grouped at the bottom and headed onto the finish. A fabulous day out had by all on the TT Circuit, I can highly recommend it.
We headed home at tea time on the ferry, back to Heysham.
We cannot wait to return; the Isle of Man is a wonderful place to visit and we will be back next year.
