Giant Dirt-E +2 (Customer Review)
Now let’s firstly set the scene as I review my Giant Dirt-E Mountain Bike from Topmark Cycles:
Just the wrong side of 50 and 6.5 with ‘big bones’ meaning any bike I ride has to be up to the job in many respects.
I’ve been biking a few years but my off roading is more about mounting a curb than climbing Mont Blanc – so I’m what you will know as a leisure biker – with rides of between 8-30 miles the norm . . . and for me that’s just fine.
So to the bike – wanted to try the electric bikes as to be honest they are just great fun and a joy to ride and for me makes me want to go out on them so major plus.
The Giant Dirt-e bike is a strong and heavy beast and when lifting it, you sure do notice the battery weight and as such it seems a heavy and cumbersome bike when compared to my old Giant 29er which was/is still a great bike.
But oh boy when you ride out on it the 3 models of power assist work a dream – eco, normal, sport all offer you the very welcome sensation of a gentle hand pushing you along or up …….. it’s a joy and I still have a smile on my face when climbing hills after 3 months of owning it. But of course when you stop peddling – you stop – its not a moped !!
The display is clear and easy to operate and it has a back light should you need it – if you buy a rechargeable front light this can be recharge as can your phone I guess [but never done this]. The bike has a walk along feature so if you have to walk it you can use that to help push it along [never used].
Gears are smooth and riding position is great – but let’s face it it’s the battery life we are all interested in:
Now baring in mind my size and frame this will and does affect the battery of course – a slim short rider would get a lot more from the battery as of course it won’t have to work as hard – but after my initial rides where I was getting 30-35 miles [which to be fair is great for most riders] from a full charge.
I have been doing some serious battery management and on flat have disabled the assist [you can turn it off] and used the gears as per normal and this has seen my battery life be extended to circa 60 miles on a full charge ……………
I live in south Cumbria so hills are a plenty and in most cases the eco is fine with normal mode for when you just want to get home – sport is just fun.
Any problems – well there was a annoying rattle on the battery pack but Topmark sorted with a very simple and quick fix.
Advice – its still relatively new technology and as such local bike shops are still the best buy route – not easy to get any fix sorted via the internet folks ……….
In summary: It’s a great bike – is great fun and really recommend the Giant Dirt-E …………………. Now where’s them hills 😊
